When Decoding Isn't Enough: Moving KS2 Readers Beyond Phonics Into Genuine Comprehension
The Phonics Success Story — and Its Limits
Synthetic phonics has transformed early reading instruction in England. Since the introduction of the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check in 2012, and the government's sustained commitment to systematic phonics teaching, more children are leaving Key Stage 1 with functional decoding skills than at any point in recent memory. That is, unambiguously, a good thing.
Yet something quietly troubling happens in many KS2 classrooms around Years 3 and 4. Teachers begin to notice a particular group of pupils: children who read aloud with reasonable accuracy and acceptable pace, but who cannot tell you what they have just read. Ask them to summarise a passage, infer a character's motivation, or explain why an author chose a particular phrase, and they stare back with polite blankness. These children have learned to decode. They have not yet learned to read.
This is not a failure of phonics instruction. It is, rather, a signal that phonics — however well taught — was always intended as a gateway, not a destination.
The Decoding–Comprehension Divide
Reading researchers have long distinguished between two separable but interdependent processes: word recognition (of which decoding is the primary mechanism) and language comprehension. The Simple View of Reading, developed by Gough and Tunmer in 1986 and still widely referenced in UK teacher training, frames reading comprehension as the product of these two components. Strong decoding skills alone do not guarantee strong comprehension; both dimensions must be developed intentionally.
In practice, this means that a child who has successfully completed a systematic phonics programme may still lack the vocabulary breadth, background knowledge, inferential reasoning, and syntactic awareness needed to make sense of a Year 5 history text or a Year 6 novel with an unreliable narrator. Phonics instruction, by design, addresses the word recognition side of that equation. The comprehension side requires something different — and, crucially, something that many KS2 classrooms are not yet providing systematically.
What 'Beyond Phonics' Actually Looks Like
Moving beyond phonics does not mean abandoning structured approaches to language. Quite the opposite. Several evidence-informed strategies can extend and deepen the work that phonics begins.
Morphological awareness is perhaps the most powerful next step. Where phonics teaches children to map graphemes to phonemes, morphology teaches them to map units of meaning — prefixes, suffixes, and root words — onto the words they encounter. A pupil who understands that -rupt relates to breaking (as in interrupt, erupt, disrupt, bankrupt) has a tool for unlocking unfamiliar vocabulary that no phonics programme can provide. Explicit morphology teaching in Years 3–6 has strong research backing, including work from Nunes and Bryant at Oxford, and it integrates naturally into both reading and writing lessons.
Semantic mapping offers another route into deeper word knowledge. Rather than teaching vocabulary as isolated items on a weekly list, semantic mapping invites pupils to explore the relationships between words — synonyms, antonyms, collocations, and connotations. When a class encounters the word desolate in a shared text, the question is not simply 'what does this mean?' but 'what other words live near it?', 'when would you choose desolate over empty or lonely?', and 'what does the author gain by using this word here?' This kind of discussion builds the rich, flexible word knowledge that supports comprehension across subjects.
Contextual reading strategies — including prediction, questioning, clarifying, and summarising — are well established through Palincsar and Brown's reciprocal teaching research. Teaching pupils to monitor their own understanding, to notice when meaning breaks down, and to deploy repair strategies is particularly valuable for those mid-KS2 readers who have coasted through on decoding ability and never developed the metacognitive habits that deeper comprehension requires.
Respecting Phonics Without Being Imprisoned by It
None of this is an argument against synthetic phonics. The evidence for its effectiveness in the early stages of reading instruction is robust, and the political and professional debates of the 1990s and early 2000s — when whole-language approaches sometimes left children without adequate decoding tools — should not be forgotten. Phonics matters. The screening check has value. Teachers who deliver systematic phonics well are doing important work.
The argument here is narrower: that phonics is a beginning, not an entirety. A child who reaches Year 5 still being taught primarily through phonics-based interventions — because that is the only structured reading approach their school has invested in — is a child being underserved. The reading curriculum in upper KS2 needs to be broader, richer, and more linguistically ambitious.
This is not a comfortable message in an educational climate that rewards measurable, standardised outcomes. Phonics is testable in a way that inferential comprehension is not. But teachers in Years 3–6 know, from daily experience, that the children sitting in front of them need more than accurate decoding. They need to understand what words mean, how sentences work, why authors make choices, and how to think carefully about what they read.
Practical Starting Points for KS2 Teachers
For teachers looking to extend their reading provision beyond decoding, several entry points are worth considering:
- Introduce morphology explicitly and regularly. A ten-minute weekly focus on a root word or prefix — displayed on a working wall and revisited across subjects — builds cumulative morphological knowledge over time.
- Slow down on shared texts. Reading a shorter passage with genuine depth and discussion is more valuable than covering more pages with shallow engagement. The comprehension skills that matter most are built through sustained, supported encounter with complex language.
- Teach inferencing directly. Many KS2 pupils have never been explicitly shown how to infer. Modelling the thinking process — 'the text says this, I know that, so I can work out...' — gives pupils a visible strategy rather than a mysterious expectation.
- Use talk as a comprehension tool. Discussion before, during, and after reading helps pupils process meaning collaboratively before they are asked to demonstrate it individually. Reading is not a silent, solitary act; it is a meaning-making process that benefits from articulation.
- Audit your reading diet. Are pupils encountering texts that genuinely challenge their comprehension, or texts they can decode comfortably without ever having to work hard for meaning? A degree of productive difficulty is necessary for growth.
The Bigger Picture
The phonics debate in England has, at times, generated more heat than light. Advocates on both sides have occasionally spoken as though the choice were binary: systematic phonics or nothing. In practice, the most effective reading teachers have always known that the answer is 'and' rather than 'or'. Phonics and morphology. Decoding and comprehension. Fluency and inference. Accuracy and understanding.
For KS2 teachers, the task is not to relitigate the phonics wars but to meet pupils where they are and take them further. Children who can decode deserve a reading curriculum that honours that achievement by demanding more of them — more thinking, more language, more depth. That is what a genuinely empowering literacy education looks like.
